Crested grebe couple tenderly incubate their eggs

Produced by Lu Ruisi (intern)

On May 26, 2025, a pair of grebes, which are national second-class protected animals, were photographed building a nest and incubating their offspring along the Baiyang River Ecological Zone in Toksun County, Altay Prefecture, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. In the footage, the female grebe incubates the eggs inside the nest, while the male grebe stands guard on the periphery, occasionally interacting with his mate and foraging for food, showcasing the unique ecological behaviors of birds during the breeding season.

Grebes are particular about water quality and habitat conditions. Their presence is a testament to the continuous improvement of the local aquatic ecosystem. In recent years, through measures such as riverbank vegetation restoration and wetland protection, Toksun County has gradually built a good ecological barrier.
