The apricot blossoms are blooming again on the Pamir Plateau, drawing tourists from all over the world to the streets and alleys of Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. At a Pakistani handicraft shop located in Taxkorgan, Pakistani businessman Ali Karim is busily wiping and sorting out various precious stones as usual, in preparation for the arrival of tourists.
31 years ago, Ali Karim's father and uncle came to Taxkorgan along the Karakoram Highway (also known as China-Pakistan Friendship Highway) and opened a handicraft shop there. Later, Ali Karim and his partners joined his father; subsequently, a new shop opened. His business is thriving, and he attributes this success to the growth of tourism in Xinjiang. "The number of tourists visiting Xinjiang is still increasing at a fast rate, and Xinjiang is a good place to do business," said Ali Karim.
